blog #2..10/14

In class we are now talking about the reconstruction after the civil wat. After the civil war there were many changes. Some of these changes were things that needed to be done and some were things that we had no say in. I personally think that if Lincoln had not been assasinated that the reconstruction would have been very different. It was obviouse that altough running mates Johnson and Lincoln both had very different views.

When Lincoln was assasinated it left Johnson in charge. This was not a good move for the now U.S. Johnson did not support the Freedmen’s Bureau. Althroughout his presedency he abused his presidential powers. He even tryed to vetoe bills by congress. In March 1866, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act, even though Johnson vetoed the bill, the republican party overroad his vetoe. This act gave blacks full citenzenship, and ended the black codes.

After johnson attempted to vetoe this act his true intentions showed. I personally think that depending on your views on racism and segregation Johnson had the potential of being a good president, as well as bush today. I think that he is categorized as a poor president because of the choices he made. But the time of reconstruction was a hard time. this time brought on a lot of pressure to everyone starting new lives, esp freedmen and a President.

The easy part of the civil war was to fight and destroy. The hard part was restoring peace. After you have brung so much destuction to a place and peoples life you cant expect to throw jobs and a couple of dollars and call it fixed. Just as the reconstruction in iraq is taking a lot of effort so did reconstructing the south. I believe that the reconstruction in iraq is also failing. Whether it be because i dont believe war solves anything and only makes things worse i dont believe in it.

What if Lincoln had not been assasinated? I think that if he was the president in charge of reconstruction, the justice that we have acheived now may have been acheived a long time a go. What if kerry had one over bushes reelection, do you think the war on Iraq would have turned out different? Or even if bush never came in office and edwards was president, Would there have really been a September 11?

This is a good summary on Andrew Johnson’s intentions for Reconstruction. Johnson wasn’t the greatest president, especially in the freed slaves’ point of view. The Freedmen’s Bureau was intended to help out the freed people, but Johnson got rid of that. He felt more need to help his fellow white Southerners, who saw him as a hero. This ties into how you said that some saw him as a good president. Either way, it was a good thing that Congress was against his policy, or the blacks would have to endure effects similar to South Africa’s Apartheid.

Andrew Johnson, like many presidents, had the potential to prove his leadership. I think the Freedman's Bureau was ideal because it promoted education for blacks and poor whites in the South. On top of that, it was a way to improve the United States' overall healthcare and economy following the Civil War. Therefore, I'm glad that President Johnson was impeached from office. The 14th Amendment is probably the most important amendment in the Constitution because it has provided equal civil rights to all. Unfortunately though, discrimination still exists today.

Good blog. I like how you tied your own opinions into your blog. You also talked about the role of president johnson and how if lincoln was never assasinated that the reconstruction would have been different. I also liked how you mentioned that Johnson abused his powers in office, which was a really important point when it comes to the freedmen's bureau.

You wrote a very good informative blog. I thinked a couple of things about it. On the other hand, i feel as though you could of told the readers a little more about if Johnson didn't become president. For example, you said that things would have been different if Lincoln didn't get assasinated but you never told how it would be different. Besides that, i liked your blog.

Well, i hate to say that i agree with you that every president has good intentions for the sake of his country even though not everyone like every one of them. Even though i hate Bush and his declaring the war on terror, he had a good reason to do it. It was to protect ourselves from others threatening to hurt us. Just like Lincoln, even though he abused his presidential powers. Lincoln only abused them because he tried to unite the country and to prevent the south from overtaking the country.
